Senate Gun Bill - Fails 54 votes to 46

On April 17th 2013 - Justice Was Not Served.  You know my mental vibe yesterday afternoon was strangely akin to the day when I learned that the Jury in the O J Simpson double murder case had acquitted the client - - and I was thinking "Can they do that?  They haven't even taken any time to discuss the case".   I remember I was at the corner by Mc Donalds on my way home on a bright and sunny, crisp day, not unlike today, when I heard the news coming from someone's car radio.  Apparently today in Government - - the momentus political decisions are not made in the halls of Congress in open debate- - but as part of some pre arranged political "gentlemen's agreement" behind closed doors, where money is exchanged.  David Cruise talked about the gun legislation that failed.  He announced he doesn’t even like to talk about politics on his show any more usually but “this is an issue of life and death”.  We can say that because the gun freaks are continuing to stockpile weapons- and as it has been said - - many may be literally against the background checks because they Themselves fear they could not pass a background check.  Someone said that actually the overall percentage of Americans who even own a gun - is dropping.  I wasn’t about to tune in to either Fox News or Rush Limbaugh because we know what jubelization must be in the ranks of the gun lobbyists as they take each other out to dinner last night and toast their success.  This was not an up or down vote on the bill- - but this was merely a procedural vote- which effectively killed this pathetically watered down gun bill, but any potential future gun bills.  One caller said “Well, it looks like President Obama is going to turn out to be our first four year lame duck President’.  The host was pot off by this remark, but it’s true.  President Obama half a press conference just after two on the Randy Rhodes program- - and he was visibly shaken and upset at the vote.  The President was introduced by a Sandy Hook bereaved parent.  The President said “The gun lobby told lies about this bill saying that it was setting up a Federal registry on gun owners, even though this is expressly forbidden in the bill.  Also the President was highly offended that somehow these gun victims are used as “props” or that somehow they lose their rights to express their opinion for future legislation.  This of course is the Neil Savedra doctrine that if you have been personally hurt or traumatized by something- - you are mentally unfit to talk about it in the future.   There had been hope that if the clochure vote were one or two votes short that the President could lean on the wavering Senators because “Nobody wants to be on the wrong side of history” and often when such votes do pass- - a whole lot of others want to get on the band wagon so that in such cases “The vote is often 65 to 35 or something”.  But alas, in this case it went the other way.

After nine I checked out the Ed Schultz show.  The thing here is that it seems the democrats lost ground and now were no longer confident they could muster the sixty percent needed for the upcoming gun bill vote.  Ed went on and on about how these Democratic senators from red states still have to face a powerful gun lobby.  I dispute this since the overall approval of the bill was 92% and one should keep in mind this was just a procedural vote to cut off debate – and not a vote on the actual bill itself.  I then went out to the courtyard and got two cups of coffee.  I then decided to go live and local- but one should keep in mind these commercial breaks or so long the actual program did not come on till 10:22 or so.  They take four commercial breaks an hour but with each break running six or seven minutes this cuts down considerably on talk show time.  There was a guy at the Boston Marathon in a white cowboy hat who was passing out American flags.  He lost one son in Iraq and the other son upon hearing of the death of his older brother- committed suicide.  This man ran tword the explosion and helped out a woman whose legs had been blown off but she was still trying to stand.  She would have bled to death had this guy gotten a volunteer to make a tornaquet out of a sweater and save her life.  Of course just before eleven CNN came out with the story that there had been an arrest in the case and the female host kept talking about “making it within the 48 hour line” because they say a case often grows cold after a certain initial period- - and I thought it was 72 hours or three days.  There have been countless false announcements of a press conference held by the FBI.  It would either be at one o clock, or then two o clock, and then five o clock, then “There will be no news conferences today” and there have been none this next day, either.  First they fingered a young dark skinned male- - but then they said they had “Video identification of the suspects” and there are believed to be two of them.  But they still have not been apprehended.  Some say they are hesitant to go public with what they have to prevent any more Richard Jewell situations.

There were two Riesen laden letters sent by some K C guy from Mississippi and the guy was apprehended today by the FBI because he signed the death threat letters.  One was to a Mississippi senator named Weiker and the other letter was to President Obama.  Also a fertilizer factory blew up in Waco Texas today.  Tomorrow is the anniversary of the Branch Davidian demise.  And there is a Judge and his wife who conspired to kill at least two District Attorneys in Texas.  So it’s been a busy, if troubling news period.  I’d like to say “We’ve seen everything bad that CAN happen this week- - but alas, I’m not that confident, and more unpleasant surprises may await us.  Moe Kelly says He is concerned about how Americans will react when we learn the ethnicity of the bombing suspect.  Rush Limbaugh has expended an awful lot of "political capital" gambling that the perpetrator is NOT a white right wing political extremist.  [splice]   I turned Randy Rhodes back on.  This was the shocker that ruined my whole day when she announced that the vote on the gun bill had failed.  The Democratic proponents of the bill only mustered 54 votes and 46 Senators voted against it.  I later learned this included four Republicans including John Mc Cain voting on our side, and four democrats voting against the bill including that Senator Baucus guy from Montana - - which made Stephanie Miller particularly furious today.  I went around the rest of the day in a blue funk, and did not even have the psychic energy to go on computer and do either this chronology- or a blog post.

Then Janet offered me a bag of two rolls in it, and I got another roll from Richard, who had a bag of them he was passing out at the table.  Later on Janet gave Bill and me one of these ham sandwich things with some mild hot sauce mayonase.  I made myself a cup of that non caffeine instant coffee and also a packet of Swiss Miss.  I was lethargic in the evening all night.  It was the ABC network news and Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune with “Suburbitory” on at eight – which is another of these episodes about snotty girls who are so full of themselves no boy would date them anyhow.  It was during this hour I fell asleep.  This is the only actual time I dozed off.  I roused about ten after nine and had a cigarette and whatever- - and was in bed by nine thirty.   This morning I woke just before six and had a diaria attack - - both before and after my shower.  I asked the med guy for diaria medication- and he gave it to me- and then I went right up stairs and had more diaria.  This is probably the worst case of it I’ve had this year.  But finally the medication kicked in.  Breakfast being so late actually worked in my favor.  We did not get orange juice and milk for our Rice Krispies till 7:35, and then it was another protracted wait till about eight for our main meal.  But it was worth it.  We got hashed browns (with catsup on the side) and a fried egg and a piece of toast with butter and jelly, and then Hilda kicked in with another piece of toast.  That housekeeper Jesse was just in here and he cleaned the bathroom and mopped the floor.  I don’t have any media devices on now.  President Obama went to Boston today and addresses the congregation at some big church.  It was kind of a rah – rah – for Bostonians kind of speech.  We know what fighters Bostonians are since the days of the Kennedy’s or for that matter- the days of the American Revolution.  Today April 18th is the actual anniversary of Paul Revere’s midnight ride.  And we know from Bewitched that Paul Revere was a silversmith.  I’ve been plagued by problems with itchiness all over my body today and recently.  This dry weather doesn’t help.  I should really seek prayer in determining what the nature of my next blog posting will be.  Maybe the American people are getting tired of me.
