I used to admire the Mc Laughlin group headed by John Mc Laughlin as a politically stimulating and diverse group of experts that aired on PBS. However the group has degenerated into political silliness. You might suspect this when a candidate who is overtly to the political right of Governor Rick Perry is cheered for his electoral victory in the Republican Party. Some of the dialog on the death of Gore Vidal was perplexing indeed. It seems you have to be Dead to be respected for being a flaming liberal. Gore Vidal wrote Myra Breckenridge and I read the book when I was eighteen. Hopefully I have intellectually matured since then. You can't say the same for the people on the show. It's getting harder and harder to distinguish this group from FOX news. It seems Gore Vidal nurished a grudge against William Buckley, the saner of the two men, till the day Buckley died and Vidal worte a tactless and scathing euligy against him. Yet Pat Buchannon acts as if he and Gore Vidal were best budds. This is a Queer development indeed. I can tell you the issues that apparently were NOT imoportant enough to discuss on this week's show. Syria didnt merit any notice, though I admit the UN just keeps passing one resolution after another but nothing ever gets done. Of course Romney's income taxes didn't merit notice. Neither did the fact that Romney's tax plan will actually raise taxes on working class Americans by two thousand dollars. Romney's disaster of an overseas trip merited notice only to say that Romney boosted his standing with Polish Catholics. But as it was pointed out, the majority of Catholics are from safe states for Obama like New York, Illinois, and California, where a Romney vote will do no good. Someone should point out to these people that this is not 1979 any more and that the Soviet Union no longer exists so promoting "solidarity" against them is about three decades too late. Pat points out that now a lot of today's catholics aren't "real" Catholics, because they're Latinos who will vote for Obama. Someone should also remind people that the National Council of Churches endorces government health care. And the National Counsil of Churches represents slightly more churches than James Dobson. And then there is Romney's five point job's plan which basically is akin to "I'm just signed a bill into law that abolishes welfare forever". The five point plan is a big bunch of nothing. It's all platitudes and pie in the sky. But of course the group reminds us it's exactly what Ronald Reagan did to get us out of the 1982 recession. Fed Stimulation and a ballooning deficet apparently had nothing to do with it. Pat keeps saying how the unemployment situation is really worse than 8.3% But he gave the - - Deliberately - - false impression that droves of people were LEAVING the employment right now when in fact the exact OPPOSITE is happening and more people are being ADDED to the labor market today. Pat forgot to tell you THAT. And of course we have the case of Mort, who used to be a Democrat but has jumped sides, and that Black guy who was a liberal - - is no longer on any more. Mort claims that there is a world of difference between Clinton's and Obama's economic approaches. But of course Bill Clinton gave one of the best speeches ever, four years ago that supported Obama for President, and this year Clinton will nominate Obama. I received a tea party mailing the other day to the effect that "Bill Clinton was furious at Obama and urged Hillary to run against him". Nobody believes that one. This so called Clinton rift is just another tea party pipe dream. And by the way Roman Catholics favor reelecting President Obama by ten points. In their closing shot they are trying to revive the Solindra non-scandal. By the way - - the Republican congressional comittee found that President Obama was NOT responsable AT ALL for the "fast and furious" guns contraversey. You wouldn't find THAT story mentioned on Mc Laughlin. This whole four against one routine that Eleanor Clift has to face every week on that show has to be a little tiresome. I don't know how long she's going to continue to to put herself through that. They might as well just replace her with some conservative intellectual like Glen Beck or Sean Hannity and make the transformation complete.
I watched all of the Friday Chris Matthews and a long thirteen plus minute segment of Thursday’s episode where the report was out on Romney’s tax plan and how it would increase taxes for the lower incomes. There was that Stephen King guy talking about dog fighting and equating that somehow with transporting a thirteen year old girl across state lines to obtain an abortion and then bringing her back and “dropping her back on the playground”. There really isn’t enough new material to blog about. They suggested that the best campaign adds were ones where new facts are learned that are also made relevant to their lives. Obama has scored big in this field lately what with all the new stuff on Romney out now. Romney adds in Florida come off as duds because they only remind the people of Florida that they are poor and they already knew that. - - - I listened to Eric Cantor on the morning response on KNX 1070. He said that small businesses don’t want to hire new employees over uncertainty about rising taxes and regulations. Who is feeding that uncertainty. Note that he did not say ‘Small businesses have higher taxes to contend with this year”. It’s all based on fear. Then it was that Nite Vit thing on KTLK with a new Purity product of Calcium-Magnesium. Then it was that other Cal-Mag product and another “stress” program to follow. The idea is to take your calcium in a form where it can be best used by the body. I turned off the radio at twenty minutes to nine and went out for a smoke. It was only the third cigarette of the morning.
I mentioned all the
extra food and sweets I’ve been eating to gain weight and Dr. Levy just said
that I shouldn’t get my calories from sugar.
Dr. Levy did not bring a box of my books over so I didn’t have to be
bothered with that. Dr. Levy had
breakfast bars for us. Joe and I had Mr
Goodbars, and I had an apple cinnamon, which was good, and two raspberry
breakfast bars, and they tasted artificial.
Then Bruce spoke of going to Sea World.
I brought up Long Beach and Dr. Levy went in to a bit more of his
history and how he learned Arabec, because I had expressed an interest learning
Arabec would be an interesting challenge.
Dr. Levy didn’t learn English still he came to Chicago at age six and he
moved to Long Beach at age thirteen in 1969.
Dr. Levy spoke of “rainbow pier” which is different from Nu Pike. Finally after ten Dr. Levy introduced the
topic of the day which was “making your life count for something” and we talked
about that and Dr. Levy suggested I write something on the subject. The session lasted an hour and forty minutes
and ran right through coffee break without a break. We broke up at 10:25 and Dr. Levy said that
we would be meeting at that time from now on, on Saturday.
The Martian rover will land on Mars tomorrow night (Sunday) and the procedure will be unusually elaborate and complicated. Of course people like Neil Savedra hold certain negatives about Science with an all consuming tenacity as though their religious lives depended on it. This craft is especially designed to search for life on Mars. Many Christians feel as though if they found out there was life on other planets it would destroy the credibility of the Bible in logic I don't quite fathom. Neil of KFI holds it as a matter of religious certainty that nothing in the Universe will EVER travel faster than the speed of light and so talk of Alien beings from other Planets becomes unlikely to impossible. Of course according to the leading theory by which he derives this doctrine- - Black Holes themselves - CAN'T as in C A N T - exist. So what is Neil to do? Of course he follows in the hallowed tradition of the Catholic Church in the early part of the Renasance, and they lost a lot of credibility for their stands.
Tomorrow if I wake up
early enough I might check in on that KFI quack thing before six. Of course if one were to ask the question of
‘Is there any advantage in this life of learning about the supernatural
dimensions of things?” I would have to say on the face of it “No”. One can use the methodology of the
scientologist for getting rid of engrams, which has ramifications in the
psychic world. It’s just better if it’s
not done by a scientologist, so you don’t have to join that church. The last I heard you couldn’t patent a
“religion”, which is what they still call themselves. Of course you could learn about the basic
teachings of Jesus and doctrines of the early “Justin Martyr” era of the
Church, from the Mormons. But it’s like
generic drugs and patents. They tinker around
with one molecule, and suddenly you get a new patent. The thing is patent laws back a hundred years
ago weren’t as they are now, where new innovations were not actively
discouraged by the government. Big
business likes government laws as they are because it eliminates competition by
legal fiat.
